Original Mixed Media Greenwich University Painting

The Inspiration

Uni Life captures a quiet moment beneath the historic colonnades of Greenwich, where centuries of architecture meet the energy and ambition of student life. Looking towards the iconic domes of the Old Royal Naval College, the painting combines expressive brushwork, layered textures and warm reflected light to celebrate one of London's most inspiring settings.

The Story Behind the Painting

Greenwich has always been a place where history and everyday life exist side by side.

Walking beneath these grand colonnades, it's impossible not to feel the scale of the architecture, yet the constant movement of students gives the space a relaxed, contemporary atmosphere. That contrast fascinated me, the grandeur of the buildings balanced by the rhythm of modern university life.

Rather than painting every architectural detail precisely, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing within the space. Layers of texture, translucent colour and expressive mark-making create depth while allowing light to filter through the arches towards the famous blue dome beyond.

The painting celebrates both the beauty of Greenwich and the quiet moments that make a place memorable.

From Gill's Sketchbook

"Some places are defined by their architecture, but it's the people moving through them every day that bring them to life."
