Original Mixed Media Sailing Painting
The Inspiration
Two Sheets to the Wind captures the freedom, movement and exhilaration of sailing. Rich reflections, vibrant colour and expressive textures combine to create a painting that celebrates life on the water.
The Story Behind the Painting
Some days on the water have an energy that's impossible to forget.
The breeze is just strong enough to fill the sails, the boats lean gently into the wind and sunlight dances across the surface in constantly changing reflections. Those are the moments that inspire me most.
In Two Sheets to the Wind, I wanted to capture that feeling rather than record a specific race or location. Loose brushwork and layered textures allow the boats to emerge naturally from the paint, while bold reflections carry the colours deep into the water, giving the whole composition movement and vitality.
The title comes from an old nautical expression, adding a touch of maritime character while perfectly reflecting the spirited atmosphere of the painting.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"The water is never still. Every gust changes the reflections, every movement of the sails creates a new composition. That's what keeps drawing me back."
