Original Mixed Media Sailing Painting
The Inspiration
Three Sails explores the quiet elegance of sailing against the backdrop of a modern city. Soft light, layered textures and a restrained palette create a peaceful moment where architecture and water seem to merge into one atmospheric scene.
The Story Behind the Painting
I've always enjoyed the contrast between the energy of the city and the calm rhythm of sailing.
In this painting, the towering skyline fades into layers of texture, allowing the yachts to become the true focus. Rather than competing with the buildings, they seem to drift effortlessly through the harbour, their sails catching the soft afternoon light.
The neutral palette creates a sense of calm while subtle turquoise tones in the water bring life and movement to the composition. Fragments of maps, typography and textured layers are woven into the surface, hinting at journeys, destinations and stories that unfold beyond the canvas.
The painting is less about a specific location and more about the atmosphere created when urban architecture, water and wind exist together in perfect balance.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"I love reducing a scene to its essential elements. Three sails, soft light and the suggestion of a city are enough to let the imagination fill in the rest."
