Original Mixed Media Statue of Liberty Painting
The Inspiration
The Face of New York focuses on one of the world's most enduring symbols of hope, freedom and possibility. Rather than depicting the entire Statue of Liberty, I wanted to concentrate on her expression, allowing the familiar landmark to become something more personal and reflective. Layers of acrylic, printed imagery and expressive brushwork create a contemporary interpretation of one of New York's defining icons.
The Story Behind the Painting
Every city has a symbol.
For New York, the Statue of Liberty has welcomed millions of people arriving with dreams of new beginnings. It represents optimism, resilience and the promise of opportunity.
By cropping tightly into Lady Liberty's face, I wanted the painting to become more intimate than a traditional landmark painting. The familiar monument becomes almost portrait-like, encouraging the viewer to connect with the emotion behind the icon rather than simply recognising the landmark.
Built with layers of acrylic, gel medium over printed imagery and textured surfaces, the painting balances bold contemporary colour with the timeless dignity of the statue itself. The expressive marks and translucent layers reflect the many stories that have passed beneath her gaze over generations.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"Sometimes a single face can tell the story of an entire city."
