What Inspired This Painting
Created for an art fair following the success of Gill's earlier sailing paintings, Tempest became an opportunity to explore something altogether more dramatic. Rather than painting a calm day on the water, Gill wanted to capture the raw energy of wind, sea and changing light, creating a painting that was driven by atmosphere and movement rather than detail.
Inspired by her lifelong connection with the River Thames and a fascination with the ever-changing relationship between water, weather and light, Tempest reflects the power of nature and the emotion of being on the water when conditions begin to change.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Some days on the water are calm and predictable. Others remind us just how powerful nature can be.
For Tempest, Gill wanted the paint itself to become part of the experience. Working with bold sweeping brushstrokes and layers of mixed media, she gradually built the painting over many stages, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next. This process of layering creates the depth, texture and movement that have become central to her work.
Rather than concentrating on the detail of the sailing boats, Gill focused on the energy surrounding them. Swirling marks suggest driving wind, shifting water and dramatic skies, while softer passages of light break through the storm, creating moments of hope within the drama. Collectors have often commented that Gill's sailing paintings are reminiscent of the atmospheric work of J. M. W. Turner. Although never a conscious influence, Gill shares Turner's fascination with capturing feeling before detail, allowing atmosphere and movement to tell the story. The result is a painting that is not simply about sailing, but about resilience, determination and our relationship with the natural world. The boats become almost secondary as the movement of the paint draws the viewer into the experience itself.
