Original Contemporary New York Cityscape Painting

What Inspired This Painting

New York is a city experienced in motion.

Rather than standing still and taking in the architecture, most memories of the city are formed while walking busy streets, weaving through traffic, watching yellow taxis disappear into the distance and catching fleeting glimpses of light reflected between towering buildings.

Taxi was inspired by exactly those moments. It captures the rhythm, movement and atmosphere of Manhattan rather than a single location, allowing the energy of the city to become the real subject of the painting.

The Story Behind the Painting

Some cities have an unmistakable rhythm. For Gill, New York has always been one of them. Rather than painting a recognisable street, Taxi was created to capture the feeling of moving through Manhattan, where reflections, traffic, towering buildings and constantly changing light combine to create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.

Working in her distinctive layered style, Gill gradually built the painting using acrylic paint, printed elements, texture and expressive vertical marks. Each layer was allowed to dry before the next was added, creating depth and allowing fragments of earlier stages to remain visible beneath the surface.

The vertical movement running through the composition mirrors the scale of the surrounding skyscrapers while also suggesting rainfall, reflections and the constant flow of the city itself. Warm amber tones contrast with cooler passages of light, creating the impression of sunlight catching glass, steel and wet streets as yellow taxis weave through the urban landscape.

Although the title references one of New York's most recognisable symbols, Taxi is ultimately a painting about atmosphere rather than transport. It explores the excitement of discovering a city that never seems to stand still and the memories that continue long after the journey has ended.

From Gill's Sketchbook

"Whenever I think about New York, I don't remember individual buildings. I remember movement, changing light and those flashes of yellow taxis disappearing through the streets. That's the feeling I wanted to paint."
