Original Mixed Media Sailing Painting
The Inspiration
Tack captures one of sailing's defining moments—the graceful turn as a yacht changes direction and the sails fill with wind once again. It is a painting about movement, balance and the quiet skill that makes sailing so captivating.
The Story Behind the Painting
There is something beautifully instinctive about watching a yacht tack across open water. For a brief moment the boat leans into the turn before settling onto its new course, powered only by wind and the experience of those on board.
I wanted this painting to capture that fleeting transition rather than simply portray a yacht at sea.
Soft neutral tones create an atmosphere of mist and changing light, allowing the dramatic angle of the sails to become the focal point. Thick layers of texture suggest the movement of water, while expressive brushwork gives the painting a sense of rhythm and energy.
Rather than focusing on detail, the composition celebrates the elegance of sailing itself—the balance between power and control, movement and stillness.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"Some of the most satisfying paintings are the simplest. A single yacht, the wind in the sails and the movement of the sea can say everything that needs to be said."
