Original Mixed Media City Painting
The Inspiration
Sunset Strip captures the atmosphere of a city street as evening light begins to transform the urban landscape. Inspired by the long perspectives of New York's avenues, the painting explores the contrast between towering architecture, glowing reflections and the silhouettes of people making their way through the city at dusk.
The Story Behind the Painting
There is a brief moment each evening when a city seems to slow.
The last light catches the buildings, reflections stretch across the wet pavement and the streets become filled with silhouettes rather than individuals. It's a moment where the architecture dominates, yet the presence of people gives the city its heartbeat.
Rather than focusing on recognisable landmarks, I wanted to create an atmosphere that could belong to many great cities. Layers of acrylic, textured mediums and printed elements build depth beneath expressive brushwork, while the strong central perspective naturally draws the eye towards the fading light.
The painting is about movement, atmosphere and the quiet beauty that appears just before the city disappears into night.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"Cities reveal their character just as daylight begins to disappear. That's when the light starts painting for me."
