What Inspired This Painting
New York is a city that refuses to stand still.
Every visit reveals something new; the changing light between the skyscrapers, the movement of people, the reflections after rain and the countless layers of history that exist alongside the constant energy of the streets.
Rather than painting a single moment, Stars & Stripes was inspired by the experience of walking through Manhattan, where memories overlap and every street seems to tell several stories at once.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Some cities become part of you.
For Gill, New York is one of those places.
Rather than working from a single photograph, Gill builds her cityscapes from remembered experiences, combining atmosphere, colour and movement to create paintings that capture how a place feels rather than simply how it looks.
In Stars & Stripes, the familiar energy of New York is broken into vertical layers that move across the surface of the painting. These transparent bands introduce fragments of additional imagery, allowing memories, architecture, signs and reflections to overlap in much the same way they do when recalling a city long after returning home.
The layered mixed media surface was developed gradually using acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums, allowing each layer to dry before the next was added. This slow process creates depth beneath the surface, inviting the viewer to discover new details with every viewing.
Although unmistakably inspired by Manhattan, Stars & Stripes is not simply a painting of New York. It is a painting about memory. The vertical layers represent the way places remain with us, not as perfect photographs, but as overlapping impressions, fleeting moments and emotional connections that continue to evolve over time.
It is this relationship between place and memory that lies at the heart of Gill Storr's work.
