Somber (Old Barcelona) captures the quiet beauty of Barcelona's historic Gothic Quarter, where grand architecture, narrow streets and changing light create an atmosphere that feels both timeless and deeply reflective.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Some places leave an impression that stays with you long after you've returned home. For me, Barcelona is one of those cities.
While wandering through the old streets, I was captivated by the elegant facades, stone archways and hidden courtyards that reveal themselves around every corner. The muted light filtering between the tall buildings created a wonderfully atmospheric scene, with figures moving quietly through the square, adding life without disturbing its peaceful character.
Working with layers of acrylic, texture mediums and transparent glazes allowed me to build depth into both the architecture and the figures. Soft blues, warm creams and gentle greys create a restrained palette that reflects the calm, contemplative mood I experienced that day.
Rather than capturing a specific moment, Somber (Old Barcelona) is about preserving the feeling of discovering one of Europe's most beautiful old cities—where history, architecture and everyday life blend effortlessly together.
