What Inspired This Painting
Every city has two personalities.
There is the energy we experience during the day, and there are the quieter moments when changing light softens the buildings, reflections appear on the streets and the city seems to pause for a moment.
Soft City was inspired by those fleeting moments in New York, when the atmosphere becomes more important than the architecture itself. Rather than capturing the noise of Manhattan, Gill wanted to paint its quieter side.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
For many people, New York is defined by its pace.
For Gill, it is equally defined by its moments of calm.
Soft City explores the gentler side of Manhattan, where light, mist and atmosphere soften the hard geometry of the surrounding skyscrapers. The familiar yellow taxis remain, but they become part of a quieter rhythm rather than the centre of attention.
Built gradually through layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums, the painting developed over many stages. Allowing each layer to dry before the next was applied creates depth beneath the surface and gives the finished work its distinctive sense of atmosphere.
Muted blues, warm ochres and soft greys merge across the composition, allowing buildings to dissolve into light while reflections blur the boundary between the city and its surroundings. Rather than describing every architectural detail, Gill invites the viewer to experience the feeling of walking through New York as light changes around them.
Like much of Gill's work, Soft City is less about documenting a location and more about preserving the emotional memory of being there. It reminds us that even the busiest places can reveal moments of stillness if we take the time to notice them.
