Original Mixed Media New York Painting
The Inspiration
Skating in New York captures one of the city's most magical winter traditions. Set against the iconic skyline, the painting celebrates the excitement and nostalgia of ice skating beneath towering buildings, where the bustle of Manhattan gives way to a moment of seasonal joy.
The Story Behind the Painting
New York transforms during the winter months, and I wanted to capture the atmosphere that makes the city feel so special at Christmas. Rather than focusing on individual skaters, I used layers of paint and printed typography to create a sense of movement and energy, allowing the figures to become part of the city's rhythm.
Soft greys and whites are contrasted with subtle warm light, while the surrounding skyscrapers disappear into the winter sky. The printed text woven through the composition reflects the constant flow of stories, headlines and history that make New York unlike anywhere else.
The textured surface and muted palette create a painting that feels both contemporary and timeless, inviting the viewer to step into a favourite New York memory.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"New York in winter has a magic all of its own. I wanted to capture that feeling of looking across the ice as the city quietly disappears into the snowfall."
