For Gill, York is one of those places. It is where she was married, where family memories continue to be made and a city she returns to time and again. Every visit brings familiar streets, favourite shops and the simple pleasure of wandering through one of Britain's most beautiful historic cities.
Shopping in York celebrates those everyday moments that often become our most treasured memories.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
The most memorable places are not always the grand landmarks.
Sometimes it is the ordinary moments that stay with us longest—walking through familiar streets, browsing independent shops and simply enjoying the atmosphere of a city that feels welcoming every time you return.
For Gill, York has become one of those special places. It holds deeply personal memories, from her wedding day to countless visits with family over the years. Rather than painting a specific building, Shopping in York captures the experience of being there, the movement of people, changing light and the lively character of the city's historic streets.
Rather than working from a single photograph, Gill developed the painting from remembered experiences, building layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums over time. Each layer was allowed to dry before the next was added, creating the depth, atmosphere and rich surface that have become a hallmark of her work. Soft neutrals, warm sunlight and hints of violet create an inviting palette, while loosely painted figures encourage the viewer to imagine themselves within the scene. The painting leaves space for personal interpretation, allowing each collector to discover their own memories within it.
Although inspired by York, this painting is ultimately about returning to places that become woven into our own lives, places that continue to welcome us back, year after year.
