Original Contemporary Reflection Painting

The Inspiration

Shadows was inspired by the way reflections can transform people and places into something almost abstract.

Rather than focusing on the figures themselves, Gill was drawn to the way light, colour and movement dissolved across the water, creating shapes that felt more like fragments of memory than a literal scene.

The Story Behind the Painting

In Shadows, the reflections become the true subject of the painting.

Built gradually through layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums, the surface developed over many stages, allowing earlier marks to remain visible beneath the finished work.

Warm golds, deep blues and soft violets move across the composition, creating a balance between energy and stillness. The figures remain deliberately indistinct, allowing the viewer to interpret the scene in their own way.

Rather than documenting a specific place, Shadows captures a fleeting moment when light, water and movement briefly come together.

It is a painting that rewards repeated viewing, revealing new marks, colours and details each time you return to it.

From Gill’s Sketchbook

"I became more interested in the reflections than the people themselves. I wanted the figures to feel as though they were emerging from memory, rather than standing clearly within the scene."
