Sails on New York explores the fascinating contrast between the stillness of sailing and the energy of one of the world's most iconic skylines. Rising sails echo the height of the surrounding buildings, creating a composition that feels both powerful and elegant.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
New York is a city of movement, yet there are moments on the water when everything seems to slow down.
Watching sailing yachts glide across the harbour with the Manhattan skyline beyond creates an extraordinary contrast. The towering buildings fade into soft layers of texture while the yachts remain graceful and timeless, driven only by the wind.
I wanted this painting to emphasise that relationship between the natural and the man-made. The tall vertical format allows the sails to dominate the composition, drawing the eye upwards while the muted palette creates an atmosphere of calm despite the city's unmistakable presence.
Layered textures, fragments of maps and subtle typography are woven into the surface, adding depth and suggesting the many journeys that begin and end in New York Harbour.
Rather than depicting a specific race or moment, the painting celebrates the enduring elegance of sailing against one of the world's most recognisable cityscapes.
