Original Mixed Media Sailing Painting

The Inspiration

Sails at Sunset celebrates the peaceful beauty of sailing at the close of the day. Warm evening light dances across calm water while colourful sails glow against a fading sky, creating a scene filled with tranquillity, reflection and the timeless pleasure of being on the water.

The Story Behind the Painting

There is a special calm that arrives as the day draws to a close.

The wind softens, the water settles and the last light transforms ordinary sails into glowing shapes reflected across the harbour. It is a moment of quiet satisfaction, when racing has finished and boats drift peacefully together beneath a warm evening sky.

Rather than focusing on individual yachts, I wanted to capture the atmosphere of that fleeting golden hour. Layers of acrylic, textured mediums and printed elements create depth within the reflections, while expressive brushwork allows the light to shimmer across the water. The rich oranges, golds and deep blues bring warmth and balance, celebrating the simple beauty of sailing at sunset.

The painting is less about a specific location and more about that universally familiar feeling every sailor recognises, the peaceful end to a perfect day afloat.

From Gill's Sketchbook

"Sunset has a way of slowing everything down. The boats become silhouettes, the water becomes light, and the whole harbour seems to exhale."
