The Inspiration
Twice each year, something extraordinary happens in New York.
For just a few minutes, the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan's street grid, flooding the avenues with a golden light that transforms the city into a glowing corridor of colour. Known as Manhattan henge, it is one of New York's most remarkable natural spectacles, drawing photographers, artists and visitors from around the world.
Witnessing this unforgettable event inspired Gill to create Ray of Light, capturing not simply the view, but the emotion of standing in the middle of the city as light and architecture come together in perfect harmony.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Some moments cannot be recreated.
They appear unexpectedly, last only a few minutes and become lasting memories long after they have disappeared. Manhattanhenge is one of those rare experiences.
Rather than painting the event as a literal record, Gill developed Ray of Light from the memory of standing within the city as warm sunlight poured between the skyscrapers, illuminating the streets and surrounding everything with an almost dreamlike glow.
Created using layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums, the painting evolved slowly over many stages. Each layer was allowed to dry before the next was added, creating depth and luminosity beneath the surface while allowing fragments of earlier marks to remain visible.
The glowing vertical shaft of sunlight becomes the heart of the composition, drawing the eye through the city while figures, taxis and architecture dissolve into atmosphere. The painting balances movement with stillness, reflecting the extraordinary contrast between one of the world's busiest cities and a brief natural event that causes everyone to stop and look upwards.
Although inspired by Manhattanhenge, Ray of Light is ultimately about those fleeting moments that remind us why we travel. The experiences we cannot plan, yet never forget.
