Original Mixed Media Figurative Painting
The Inspiration
On The Menu is inspired by the quiet moments that often become our strongest memories when travelling. A simple café scene, shared conversation and warm evening light come together in an expressive composition that celebrates atmosphere more than detail.
The Story Behind the Painting
Some of the most memorable experiences happen when nothing particularly extraordinary is taking place.
Sitting outside a café, watching people pass by, sharing conversation over food or coffee—these are the moments that give a city its character. In On The Menu, I wanted to capture that feeling of slowing down and becoming part of the life around you.
The figures are deliberately suggested rather than defined, allowing the viewer to imagine their own story. Rich layers of acrylic, texture and printed elements build the surface, while warm ochres, deep blues and glowing reds create a welcoming atmosphere that feels both intimate and timeless.
Rather than depicting a specific café, the painting celebrates those universal moments of connection that happen wherever people gather.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"Sometimes it's not the famous landmarks you remember most, but the quiet table where you stopped, watched the world go by and felt completely present."
