The title Nine refers to the eight rowers and their coxswain, whose teamwork and precision transform nine individuals into a single moving force.
The Inspiration
There is something magical about an early morning on the river.
The water is almost still, the world is quiet, and the only sound is the rhythmic splash of oars moving together. Nine celebrates the harmony, precision and teamwork that make rowing such a captivating sport.
The Story Behind the Painting
As both a rower and an artist, I have always been fascinated by the balance between strength and elegance that rowing demands.
Rather than concentrating on individual athletes, I wanted to capture the crew moving as one across the water. The expansive sky and silvery reflections create a feeling of space and tranquillity, allowing the small bursts of colour within the boat to become the focal point.
Created using layers of acrylic paint, texture and mixed media, the surface is intentionally subtle, revealing delicate marks and reflections that mirror the calm of the river.
For me, this painting represents more than rowing. It is about teamwork, trust and the quiet beauty found in shared purpose.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"The best rowing crews move as if they are one person. I wanted this painting to capture that rhythm, where every stroke is perfectly connected."
