Original Mixed Media New York Painting

The Inspiration

Moody Manhattan captures New York on one of those atmospheric days when the city seems wrapped in soft light and shadow. Layers of typography, architecture and texture combine to create a contemporary interpretation of one of the world's most recognisable skylines.

The Story Behind the Painting

New York is a city that constantly changes with the light.

On bright days it feels energetic and bold, but when clouds roll in the buildings become softer, quieter and more mysterious. Those changing moods fascinate me just as much as the architecture itself.

In Moody Manhattan, I wanted to move beyond simply painting a famous bridge. By layering typography, textured surfaces and expressive marks, the city gradually emerges through the paint, encouraging the viewer to discover new details with every glance.

Working on paper allowed me to build delicate transparent layers while preserving the freshness of the composition. Once framed behind glazing, the painting becomes both contemporary and timeless, celebrating the character and atmosphere of Manhattan rather than simply recording its landmarks.

From Gill's Sketchbook

"Some cities are defined by their skyline. New York is defined just as much by its atmosphere. Every change in weather transforms the streets into a completely different painting."
