Original Mixed Media Sailing Painting
The Inspiration
Masts celebrates the quiet beauty of a marina at rest. Rather than focusing on sails or racing, the painting explores the striking rhythm of tall masts reflected against a soft sky, creating a composition built on balance, texture and simplicity.
The Story Behind the Painting
There is something almost architectural about a marina.
Rows of yachts become forests of vertical lines, each mast standing against the sky with its own subtle character. From a distance, the boats almost disappear, leaving behind a beautiful arrangement of shapes, reflections and negative space.
For this painting I deliberately kept the colour palette restrained, allowing the textures and composition to become the focus. Thick layers of paint create depth across the surface while delicate linear details give the impression of rigging without overwhelming the scene.
The result is a painting that feels calm and contemporary, inviting the viewer to pause and appreciate the elegance found in simplicity.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"Sometimes it's the details rather than the whole scene that inspire a painting. Looking across a marina, I found myself fascinated by the pattern the masts created against the sky."
