Original Contemporary Marilyn Monroe Portrait

What Inspired This Painting

Few people have become as instantly recognisable as Marilyn Monroe.

More than sixty years after her death, her image continues to symbolise glamour, confidence and Hollywood's golden age. For Gill, however, Marilyn represents something more complex. Behind the famous smile was a woman whose public image became one of the most enduring icons of the twentieth century.

Rather than recreating a familiar photograph, Gill wanted to celebrate Marilyn's lasting cultural influence by combining portraiture with layers of typography, vintage-inspired graphics and expressive texture.

The Story Behind the Painting

Some faces become part of history. Marilyn Monroe is one of them.

In Marilyn in Hollywood, Gill combines a confident portrait with rich layers of mixed media, creating a painting that reflects both the glamour and complexity of one of cinema's greatest icons.

Working gradually through multiple layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured surfaces, Gill allows fragments of vintage typography and Hollywood references to emerge beneath the surface. These details are not simply decorative—they represent the passing of time, the stories we associate with Marilyn and the way cultural icons continue to evolve long after their own lifetime.

Touches of gold catch the light and introduce a sense of elegance, echoing the glamour that defined Hollywood's golden era, while the expressive mark-making prevents the portrait from becoming simply a realistic likeness.

Instead, the painting becomes a celebration of memory, fame and artistic legacy.

Like many of Gill's portrait paintings, Marilyn in Hollywood is less about capturing a face and more about exploring why certain people continue to inspire generation after generation.

From Gill's Sketchbook

"I wanted Marilyn to feel timeless. The layers beneath the portrait became part of her story, allowing fragments of Hollywood, memory and glamour to sit just below the surface."
