Original Mixed Media London Landscape Painting

The Inspiration

London Fly Past captures one of London's most familiar sights, the graceful sweep of seagulls soaring above the River Thames, with the city's iconic skyline fading into the background. Combining movement, atmosphere and soft layers of texture, the painting celebrates the energy and freedom found along London's waterfront.

The Story Behind the Painting

London is a city of constant movement, yet along the Thames there are moments when nature quietly steals the scene. Watching the gulls glide effortlessly above the river inspired this painting, their wings cutting through the sky as the city's landmarks emerge through mist and light.

Rather than focusing on architectural detail, I wanted to create the feeling of London, the changing light, the reflections on the water and the sense of space created by birds in flight. Layers of mixed media soften the skyline while allowing familiar silhouettes to emerge, creating a painting that feels both contemporary and timeless.

For me, London Fly Past is about freedom, movement and seeing one of the world's great cities from a different perspective.

From Gill's Sketchbook

"The gulls are just as much a part of London as its famous landmarks. I loved painting the contrast between their effortless movement and the stillness of the city beyond."
