The Inspiration
Some places become unforgettable because of who you shared them with.
Le Café Marly sits beneath the elegant arcades beside the Louvre Museum in Paris, offering one of the city's most iconic places to pause, watch the world and absorb its timeless beauty.
This painting was inspired by a visit to Le Café Marly while celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday, a day that will always hold special memories.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Paris has always inspired me, but this visit felt especially meaningful.
After wandering through the Louvre, we sat beneath the grand arches of Le Café Marly, watching people drift between the museum and the gardens. The changing light, the elegant architecture and the quiet conversations created one of those moments you wish could last a little longer.
Rather than simply recording the café itself, I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the afternoon, the feeling of slowing down and appreciating where you are.
Built over many layers of acrylic paint, printed textures and mixed media, the painting allows earlier marks to emerge through translucent colour, echoing the layers of history surrounding one of the world's greatest museums.
Loose figures, soft reflections and gentle brushwork invite the viewer into the scene, allowing their own memories of Paris to become part of the painting.
For me, this artwork will always be connected to a wonderful family celebration and one of my favourite afternoons in Paris.
