The Inspiration
Le Marquise was inspired by discovering one of those hidden cafés that seem to capture the spirit of a city. Weathered architecture, faded paintwork and quiet streets combine to create a scene full of charm and character.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Some buildings have a personality all of their own.
As I wandered through the narrow streets, the striking turquoise frontage of Le Marquise immediately drew my attention. Surrounded by older stone buildings, it stood quietly yet confidently, inviting people to pause for a coffee or simply watch the world pass by.
Rather than painting the building in photographic detail, I wanted to capture the atmosphere surrounding it. Layers of textured paint soften the edges, allowing memories and impressions to merge together much like they do after returning from a memorable journey.
Hints of a figure, reflections and worn architectural details give the painting a sense of life without distracting from the building itself. The result is a scene that feels familiar, welcoming and timeless.
Like many of my city paintings, this piece is less about documenting a place and more about preserving the feeling of being there.
