What Inspired This Painting
Some places stay with us long after we've left. Mykonos is one.
Not because we remember every street or building, but because we remember how they made us feel. Island of Winds was inspired by one of those places, where warm light, weathered buildings and shimmering water combine to create an atmosphere that lingers in the memory.
Rather than recording a specific location, Gill wanted to capture the feeling of arriving somewhere shaped by the sea, where reflections, changing skies and coastal light become part of everyday life.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Water has always played an important role in Gill's work.
Growing up with family roots connected to the River Thames, and travelling to coastal towns and waterfront cities throughout Europe, she has long been fascinated by the way light transforms places beside the water.
Island of Winds was built gradually through layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums, allowing each stage to dry before the next was introduced. This slow process creates depth beneath the surface, with fragments of earlier layers emerging through the finished painting.
The warm ochres, soft greys and hints of blue reflect changing light across the waterfront, while textured marks blur the boundary between architecture and its reflection. The buildings appear grounded, yet softened by the atmosphere, allowing the water to become an equally important part of the composition.
Rather than depicting a single harbour or coastal village, Island of Winds explores the emotional connection we develop with places beside the sea. It is a painting about memory, light and the quiet rhythm of waterfront life, inviting the viewer to pause and experience the atmosphere rather than simply observe the scene.
