Original Contemporary New York Cityscape Painting

What Inspired This Painting

Cities are constantly changing.

New buildings appear, old stories disappear and every journey leaves behind another memory. Graffiti Empire was inspired by New York's extraordinary energy, where architecture, street art, reflections and movement exist together to create an ever-changing visual landscape.

Rather than recording a single street or landmark, Gill wanted to explore the contrast between the permanence of the city's iconic skyline and the temporary marks left behind by the people who pass through it every day.

The Story Behind the Painting

New York has always inspired Gill because it refuses to stand still.

Every visit reveals something different. Light changes between the buildings, reflections appear after rain and layers of history sit alongside modern life. Graffiti Empire captures that sense of constant evolution.

Built through multiple layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums, the painting gradually developed as each layer was allowed to dry before the next was introduced. This patient process allows fragments of earlier marks and colours to remain visible beneath the surface, reflecting the way memories of a city build over time rather than existing as a single moment.

Bold sweeping gold gestures move across the composition like spontaneous graffiti or pathways through the streets, contrasting with the structured geometry of the surrounding buildings. These expressive marks were never intended simply as decoration. They introduce movement, rhythm and a sense of human presence within the urban landscape, reminding us that cities are shaped just as much by the people who experience them as by the architecture itself.

Although unmistakably inspired by New York, Graffiti Empire is ultimately a painting about memory, movement and the countless stories that overlap within every great city.

From Gill's Sketchbook

"I loved the contrast between the order of the buildings and the freedom of the marks flowing across them. For me, those sweeping lines became another layer of memory woven into the city."
