The Inspiration
Dark Clouds captures the exhilarating moment when a fleet of racing yachts pushes forward beneath an approaching storm. Created for an art fair, this large-scale painting was designed to make an immediate impact, drawing viewers into the excitement, drama and raw energy of competitive sailing.
The Story Behind the Painting
Scale was an important part of this painting from the very beginning. Measuring an impressive 150 × 100 cm, I wanted the artwork to surround the viewer with the same sense of speed, power and anticipation you experience when watching yachts race under threatening skies.
The contrast between the golden light breaking through and the gathering dark clouds creates a feeling of tension and excitement. Heavy textures and expressive brushwork capture the movement of wind across the water, while the angled sails seem to lean into the storm, driving relentlessly forwards.
Originally created as a centrepiece for an art fair, Dark Clouds was painted to command attention from across the room. Its size allows every brushstroke, texture and reflection to work together, creating an immersive atmosphere that photographs simply cannot fully capture.
