Original New York City Painting by Gill Storr
The Inspiration
Some cities never stand still, and New York is one of them.
The constant movement of yellow taxis, glowing lights and towering buildings creates an energy that is impossible to ignore. I wanted this painting to celebrate that feeling, not a single street, but the experience of being immersed in the city itself.
The Story Behind the Painting
Rather than focusing on architectural detail, I concentrated on atmosphere.
Using layers of acrylic paint, printed imagery, texture and translucent glazes, I gradually built the painting until the streets seemed to emerge through the surface. The deep blues and violets create a sense of shadow, while vibrant yellows and warm light pull the viewer into the heart of the city.
Like many of my cityscapes, this piece is less about a location and more about a feeling. The painting invites you to experience the rhythm, movement and colour that make New York one of the world's most exciting cities.
Every layer contributes to the sense of depth, encouraging you to discover something different each time you look.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"I wanted this painting to capture the feeling of being surrounded by the energy of New York, where every street seems alive with light, movement and endless possibility."
