What Inspired This Painting
Some of the most memorable places are not the ones everyone visits.
They are the quiet streets discovered by chance—the places that reveal themselves slowly and leave a lasting impression. Circus Lane, tucked away in Edinburgh's historic Stockbridge district, is one of those places.
With its cobbled streets, elegant Georgian architecture and changing Scottish light, Circus Lane offered Gill the inspiration to create a painting that celebrates atmosphere, discovery and the simple pleasure of wandering without a destination.
 
The Story Behind the Painting
Gill has always been drawn to places that invite you to slow down.
Unlike the energy of New York or the bustle of larger cities, Circus Lane offers something quieter. The narrow street, historic buildings and warm stonework create an atmosphere that feels almost timeless, encouraging the viewer to pause and notice the changing light, reflections and subtle details that make the location so distinctive.
Rather than working from a single photograph, Gill developed the painting through remembered impressions gathered while exploring Edinburgh. Built gradually through layers of acrylic paint, printed elements and textured mediums, each stage was allowed to dry before the next was added, creating depth beneath the surface and allowing traces of earlier marks to remain visible.
Warm ochres and soft violets reflect the changing Scottish light, while expressive brushwork gently softens the architecture, creating a painting that is less about documenting a location and more about preserving the feeling of being there.
Although inspired by a specific street, Circus Lane speaks to something more universal the joy of discovering places that quietly become part of our own story.
