Original Sailing Painting by Gill Storr
The Inspiration
Some of the most peaceful moments on the water happen when the wind is barely strong enough to fill the sails.
Everything slows. Reflections become clearer, the boats drift almost silently and the atmosphere becomes wonderfully tranquil. A Gentle Breeze was inspired by those calm moments that every sailor treasures.
The Story Behind the Painting
Unlike many of my more energetic sailing paintings, this piece is about stillness rather than speed.
Built through layers of acrylic paint, texture, printed elements and translucent glazes, I wanted the boats to emerge gently from the surface rather than dominate the composition. Soft blues, pale aqua tones and delicate neutrals create a feeling of space, light and quiet reflection.
The heavily layered surface reveals subtle details that only become visible the longer you spend with the painting. Rather than recording a particular location, A Gentle Breeze captures the feeling of being surrounded by calm water, soft light and the gentle movement of sailing boats.
It is a painting designed to bring a sense of peace into a room.
From Gill's Sketchbook
"Not every sailing day is about racing. Sometimes it's simply about enjoying the silence, the reflections and the gentle movement of the water."
